Types of Depression

Major depression, or major depressive disorder, often makes you feel sad. You may experience most days for at least two weeks symptoms, such as losing interest in activities, weight changes, sleep problems, restlessness or slowed down, fatigue, worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and suicidal thoughts. Remember that significant depression can manifest differently in each individual.

Bipolar disorder makes you cycle between depression and mania, with periods of normal mood in between. Mania can cause a person to feel great, have lots of energy, jabber, have racing thoughts, and experience frustration and irritability. During a manic episode, some people with bipolar disorder may experience psychosis. In addition, stress and conflict can precipitate episodes of depression or mania.

Antenatal depression (depression during pregnancy), postnatal depression (depression after pregnancy), and perinatal depression (depression at any point during pregnancy or the first year after delivery) may affect both women and men throughout pregnancy and the first year after childbirth. Around 10% of pregnant women suffer from depression, which rises to 16% in the first three months following childbirth. We must remember that 1 in 10 males might suffer from prenatal depression.

Persistent depressive disorder is a kind of depression that lasts at least two years. It was previously known as dysthymia or persistent severe depression. You may notice changes in appetite, sleeping too much or too little, a persistent lack of energy, poor self-esteem, difficulty focusing or making choices, and feelings of hopelessness. You should contact a mental health practitioner if you have had these symptoms for a long time.

Do you need your counselling during weekends, holidays, and in the late evening? No problem; we are unique since we will provide appointments at no additional cost, even if you book at the last minute. We are here to assist you in making it simple to prioritise your mental health.

There is no reason to give up if you have previously tried therapy and have not experienced the desired outcomes.

Myths and facts about depression

Fact: Depression is a mental illness. Experts believe that certain brain chemicals may be out of balance but there is no definite answer. No single thing causes depression. Many things, including your genes, stressful events, illness, and medicines, can cause the imbalance.

Fact: Recovery from depression is expected with treatment included psychotherapy. Most people with depression can be treated, and they return to their work and home routines. Without treatment, depression can last for months or even years.

Fact: Antidepressants may help with some symptoms of depression. Yet no antidepressant can address the underlying reasons or help you figure out what’s causing it. Also, many antidepressants may have side effects that might worsen your depression, such as impairing your sexual life or inducing negative thoughts.

It is critical to explore your treatment choices with your doctor and maybe explore alternatives or integrative support to medication. You can contact us also, and we will be happy to assist you to decide what approach you wish to have to your depression. Depression can be effectively treated using psychotherapies such as IFS (Internal Family System Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). These therapies can assist you in identifying and addressing the underlying reasons for your depression and developing appropriate coping techniques to manage your symptoms.

Fact: Depression may start after something bad happens, but other things also may trigger it. Medicines, hormone problems, childbirth, and using alcohol and drugs all can trigger depression. Sometimes it happens for no clear reason.

Convenient Online Counselling

Online counselling, often known as teletherapy or cyber counselling, is a therapy in which clients contact mental health practitioners through the internet.

Research conducted at the University of Zurich analysed the efficacy of internet therapy over traditional face-to-face therapy for individuals with depression and anxiety. According to the study, 57% of patients who finished online counselling were depressed-free, compared to 42% of those who got traditional face-to-face counselling.

Let’s see some reasons why online counselling is better than face-to-face: expenses for transportation, parking, babysitting, and other miscellaneous costs can be eliminated. Online counselling also provides greater flexibility in scheduling, as appointments can be made anytime and anywhere with an internet connection. Additionally, online counselling can offer a sense of anonymity and comfort for those who may feel more at ease communicating through a screen rather than in person.
